Eoin Flynn

 

José Carlos Hernandez (Canary Islands) and Yvonne Van Vlerken (The Netherlands) triumph in the Half Marathon. Tore Dybdahl (Norway) and Beatriz Esteban Miller (Spain) prevailed in the 10km race. The 2014 DISA Gran Canaria Marathon lived its final party on Sunday, January 26, with the celebration of the three races Marathon, Half Marathon and 10 km through the streets of the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria where the sun shone and filled the public to encourage more than 6,000 runners who started the race at Venegas St. in the capital.

 

The longest distance of 42.195 meters of the marathon had Irish color. Eoin Flynn (Irish living in Gran Canaria) finished the big race in 2:29:15, beating Miguel Ángel Vaquero and Manuel Tornero, second and third respectively. Philippa Taylor (England) completed the race in 2:54:31, winning the female category and going ahead of Heini Papinsaari (Findland) and the Cristina Würgler (Switzerland). 

 

José Carlos Hernandez, who attended the Olympic Games in London 2012, met the expectations and won the Half Marathon in 1:04:49. Oscar Fernández and Samuel Chavez followed him. In the female category, Yvonne Van Vlerken (The Netherlands) won in 1:18:38 and prevented Tamara San Fabio win her the fourth race in Gran Canaria, who arrived second leading Patricia Diaz. 

 

Youth was the main protagonist in the 10km race where the 16-years old Tore Dybdahl from Norway arrived to the finish line after 32:14, and the 21-years old Beatriz Esteban Miller from Burgos made it in 37:11. It has been then demonstrated the bright future of a young race with young protagonists. The men's podium was completed by Francisco Cabrera and Juan Jesús Casanova, and the female one by Alexandra Schaller and Patricia de la Llave.

"We have changed the route of the DISA Gran Canaria Marathon thinking in the runners of the three distances. The event is growing up and we believe the new location of the start and finish line is better for the public, runners, organization and services in general."

The 'Gran Canaria EXPODEPORTE' will be the biggest sport expo in the Canary Islands, where there will be more than 50 stands of several sports and related sectors. More than 20.000 people of all ages will visit this expo. It will take place at the Palacio de Congresos de Canarias, in the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium on the 22nd, 23rd and 24th of January 2015.
